Have you ever wondered what your food can do other than satisfy your hunger? As it turns out, the nutrients that are found in some foods are actually great for your skin! Whether you are looking to save a little money or wanting to experiment with some DIYs, the following five foods are great to try out for a variety of your skin's needs...
1. Garlic: Banish Blemishes
Why (this works): Garlic contains allicin, a compound responsible for the flavor and smell as well as its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial qualities. The antioxidant properties of garlic work to remove contaminants from the skin, clearing up pimples and preventing new ones.
Try (this yourself): Apply fresh garlic juice directly onto the pimple before bed, then wash off in the morning. Be sure to test an out-of-sight spot of your skin first to make sure you don't have an allergic reaction before trying elsewhere.
2. Sour Cream: Tone and Texture
Why: Sour cream works well as a topping for your skin, improving both tone and texture thanks to the lactic acid it contains. A form of alpha hydroxy acid, the lactic acid gently smooths and nourishes skin and is especially suited for sensitive skin.
Try: For a healthy, glowing complexion, spread a tablespoon of full-fat sour cream on your face. Leave it on for 20 minutes, then rinse off with lukewarm water.
3. Apple Cider Vinegar: Balance Oily Complexions
Why: The acidic nature of vinegar acts as an astringent, closing the pores of your skin and balancing the pH, helping to prevent it from becoming either too oily or too dry. Alpha hydroxy acids remove dead skin cells, and malic acid gives apple cider vinegar antibacterial and antifungal properties, which prevent acne and skin infections.
Try: For best results, use organic, unfiltered and unpasteurized apple cider vinegar. Use a cotton ball to gently wipe a mixture of half water, half apple cider vinegar over your skin. This will remove oil, make up and other impurities. Avoid your eyes, and use sunscreen if exposed to the sun since the vinegar makes skin more sensitive to ultraviolet rays.
4. Bananas: Moisturize and More
Why: Bananas are multitaskers, chock full of goodness, both in the pulp and the peel. The fruit contains, among other things, vitamin E, which helps reduce the appearance of fine lines. The peels contain nutrients, vitamins, enzymes and more, including polyphenols and carotenoids, which have antioxidant properties that help hydrate and keep your skin youthful. Vitamins and minerals lock in moisture, helping you improve dry, dull skin, and enzymes fight acne and age spots.
Try: For moisturizing, age-defying purposes, rub the inner side of the banana peel over your entire face or just target a particularly troublesome area of skin. Leave on for at least 30 minutes before rinsing in warm water. To target blemishes, gently rub the peel for a few minutes on the affected area. Rinse. Repeat three times daily.
5. Lemons and Sea Salt: Treat Acne
Why: Lemon's acidity unclogs pores and kills bacteria that cause acne. Sea salt also draws out impurities and cleanses pores deeply as well as balances oil production. Like lemons, sea salt has antibacterial properties.
Try: Though both lemons and sea salt work well individually, you can combine the effectiveness of these ingredients into one refreshing treatment. Wash and dry your face. Mix 2 teaspoons of sea salt and 1 teaspoon of fresh lemon juice. Massage the mixture into your skin for a minute or two, and leave on for about 10 minutes. Rinse with warm water, pat dry and apply an oil-free moisturizer. Use this to treat acne twice a week.
