The Art of Perfecting a Walking Meditation

What is inner beauty and how do we attain it? It comes from two very powerful parts of our being: strength and vitality. While we often find it hard to connect to those parts of us, it really is much simpler than we think! All it takes is a few simple acts of self-care. Taking the time to reconnect with your body doesn’t have to interfere with your daily routine- often, all you have to do is walk.

Many great thinkers have used a walking meditation to draw their consciousness back to the present moment. The practice is done anywhere; and all that you need is a quiet space and the desire to slow down your mind. With each deliberate “step”, your mind will remain fixed on the present. If it wanders, then you must take the stray thought and let it go. If reconnecting with your mind and body is something that you would like to achieve, there are a few guidelines that you can follow to make the most out of your walking mediation.

Envision your Place of Peace

While walking, you will be exercising your mind throughout the process. Make sure to take deep breaths to ensure the purest form of rejuvenation. Go, in your mind, to a place of peace and contentment. Who, what, when, where are you the happiest? For example, imagine you are walking along the shores of the Dead Sea, breathing in and out the nourishing air of the desert. As your feet press into the mineral-rich earth, walk slower as your skin melts into the earth. Your mantra should simply be, “I am here, in the now.” Your body should be one with the earth.

Be Kind to your Thoughts

When you find yourself straying, and your thoughts growing heavy, you should acknowledge them and then try to let them go. After you label each stressful thought, for example, as “worrying” or “planning”, try to bring your mind back to your mantra. Smell the salty air of the sea, and submerge yourself into the water. Fed by many rivers, the Dead Sea is the lowest point on earth. It is a basin rich with minerals that sustain life, and will sustain you as well as you float into the sea.

Focus on Awareness

The appeal of a walking meditation is its simplicity. Whether you are in the Dead Sea, as given in our example, on a sidewalk in your neighborhood, or deep in the forest, awareness is your key objective. This will lead to you finding your strength, vitality, and inner beauty. Simply bring your awareness to the present moment, and let all stresses go.

After Meditation
