The Real Reasons Your Moisturizer Isn't Working

April 10, 2016 Team AHAVA

Nothing is more frustrating than applying layer after layer of moisturizer to your face, only to feel the dryness of your skin remaining stagnant or even increasing. Not only does this cause you to go through your products quicker than normal (making your wallet feel a bit lighter), but it also makes you feel as though there is no solution to your dry skin. The good news is that you have no reason to fear- the problem could simply be how you’re approaching your skincare routine.

To find out how to get the most out of your moisturizer, here’s a little 'do's and don'ts' tip list to spruce up your daily facial and body skincare practices.

1. You’re Applying Moisturizer at the Wrong Time

It may seem like common sense to apply moisturizer to dry skin after getting out of the shower or when you feel tight—but that’s too late! To get the most out of your moisturizer, you should have a little water already on your skin, preferably after washing or toning your face. This will lock in your skin’s natural hydration process and make your skin less likely to become dry—even after moisturizing. Those with oily skin know that over-drying can actually make your skin oilier (since your body needs to produce more oil than you need to compensate for the dryness), so applying your moisturizer at the right time will help your skin to avoid feeling both too dry and too oily

2. Be Consistent In Your Skin Care Routine

It’s important for you to have a regular, daily routine when it comes to hydrating your skin. While there are so many choices for products on the market, make sure you give your current product enough time to produce results for your skin. Sometimes it’s easy to abandon a product if it doesn’t provide quick results, but having great skin takes time, assuming you’re using the right products.

3. Use the Right Skincare, and Moisturizing Products

From serums to creams, there are so many solutions to moisturizing your skin. Even though they each may have moisturizing properties, each product holds a different purpose for your skin. You should make sure you know the differences.

For example, a serum is better used as a hydration primer, not your main source of moisturizer because they’re too lightweight on their own. On top of your serum you should be layering your skin with a lotion or cream, depending on the level of hydration you need. Don’t forget to use moisturizer with SPF during the day! You will want to protect your skin from over-drying in the sun. Also, if you are currently experiencing skin aging, you will need to double up on the moisture. Try upgrading to a product that will protect your skin from free radicals.

4. Pat, Don’t Rub Your Moisturizer!

Warning: If your normal routine is to slather moisturizer all over your face, this could be why it isn’t working. So stop rubbing and wiping your moisturizer, and start patting the product on your face instead. Patting your skin actually increases pressure and heat, thus helping your skin to absorb moisture better.

5. Clear the Way for Hydration

It's extremely important to exfoliate your face often, as a build up of dead skin cells can prohibit your face moisturizers from properly penetrating your skin. Make sure to wash your face 2 to 3 days per week with a gentle scrub to get rid of dead skin cells. By doing so, you’ll allow your moisturizer to be the star product that it’s meant to be, leaving you with soft, hydrated skin.

We hope that these tips help you in your journey to clearer, smoother, more hydrated skin. Have any tips that you would like to share? Please let us know what works for you!
