DIY Salt Scrubs: Give the Gift of Healthy, Glowing Skin

November 17, 2016 Team AHAVA

The holiday season is full of cheerful nights, bright decorations, and plenty of parties with friends and family. It's also a perfect time to show those you care about just how much they mean to you through thoughtful gifts. Take it one step further -- a DIY holiday gift -- and they'll thrill at the fact that you've taken the time to create something just for them.

A beautiful and useful gift that you can create easily, Dead Sea salt scrubs are perfect for the important people in your life. Using a wide variety of ingredients, you can customize scrubs to each individual's tastes, skin type, and lifestyle. Dead sea salt scrubs are detoxifying, exfoliating, moisturizing and soothing. Sourcing local, organic ingredients when possible makes it all the more meaningful for both the recipient AND the planet.

Four Fantastic Recipes to get you Started

The possibilities are endless when it comes to creating your own salt scrubs. The most important thing is to use natural, quality ingredients, including a very high-quality salt to ensure purity and achieve the best results. While regular salt is known to dry out the skin, Dead Sea salt contains a higher percentage of natural minerals, including magnesium, calcium, and potassium, which actively retain and nourish skin's natural moisture.

Here are four recipes to get you started. Use your creativity to customize them to the specific needs of the lucky recipient.

Blood Orange and Vanilla Scrub

1 cup Dead Sea salt

1/2 cup olive oil

1 1/2 tablespoons dried orange zest

1/2 teaspoon blood orange essential oil

1 vanilla bean

In a medium-sized bowl, combine the Dead Sea salt, olive oil, orange zest and essential oil. With a sharp paring knife, split the vanilla bean down the center and scrape the contents into the bowl. Next, finely chop the bean pod and add it to the mix. Combine well then transfer to your chosen container.

Skin Detox Soothing Skin Scrub

1 cup Dead Sea salt

1/2 cup olive oil or liquid coconut oil

40 drops Thieves essential oil blend

Combine all ingredients in a bowl, and transfer to your chosen container.

Snickerdoodle Scrub

1 cup Dead Sea salt

2/3 cup refined coconut oil

1 cup brown sugar

1 tablespoon ground cinnamon (adjust to preference)

Combine all ingredients in a bowl (the coconut oil can be gently heated in a cup placed in hot water to soften). Transfer to your chosen container.

English Garden Scrub

1 cup Dead Sea salt

2/3 cup refined coconut oil

1/2 cup turbinado sugar

1/4 cup dried lavender blossoms

1/4 cup dried rose petals

1/4 teaspoon lavender essential oil

1/4 teaspoon rose essential oil

Combine all ingredients in a bowl (the coconut oil can be gently heated in a cup placed in hot water to soften). Transfer to your chosen container.

Presentation Is Key

To make your scrubs really stand out, package them in interesting and unique containers. Vintage canning jars, unique jelly glasses, antique cheese crocks ... the possibilities are endless. If breakage is a concern, clear plastic cosmetic tubs are available through many online venues. Embellish containers with beautiful ribbons, sparkling glue-on gems or any other decorative features you think would please the recipient. Include a wooden scoop stick for ease of use.

Include a pretty label or tag that instructs the recipient on the use of these scrubs. You can copy and paste the instructions below, or write your own.

"This hand-made scrub is great to keep by your sink, bath, or shower for any time you need a quick scrub or energetic soak. Your skin will feel refreshed and moisturized after each use!

Bath: Fill tub with warm water. Dampen skin. Standing in bath, slather a generous amount of scrub over your skin, scrubbing gently in circular motions. Allow excess to fall into water. Soak in scrub-infused water for twenty minutes.

Shower: Dampen skin under warm water. Turn off shower and smooth scrub over your skin, scrubbing in gentle circular motions. Allow to soak in for 5 minutes, then rinse.

Note: Oil can be slippery! Be sure to have proper footing inside and outside the bath or shower! Wipe surfaces of tub or shower after use."

Pamper those you care about with thoughtfully crafted, ethically sourced gifts this holiday season. They'll thank you and so will the environment. Happy Holidays!
