How to Protect Your Skin from Environmental Toxins and Other Threats

May 11, 2016 Team AHAVA

Are you doing enough to protect your skin from everyday pollution? Don't let the 'urban grey' complexion caused by city pollution get you and your skin down.

Your skin, just like lung tissue, serves as an interface between your body and its surrounding atmosphere, and is thus the primary contact for various pollutants (dirt, smoke, gas, pollen, heavy metals, exhaust fumes etc.).

While many of us are becoming more aware of sun damage on skin, and are taking appropriate measures to defend against this threat, other environmental threats are perhaps lesser-known - though no less important.

For example: Did you know that even the visible light from your daily use of tablets, smartphones, and computer screens can have an impact on your skin due to ambient damage. Skincare products that contain potent antioxidant carotenoids (i.e. beta-carotene), are helpful in protection, and serve to block much of that damage.

The environment and lifestyle choices we make, indeed play a big role in the health of our bodies and our skin.

According to Dr. Rajesh Balkrishnan, Director at the Center for Medication Use, Policy and Economics at the University of Michigan, “A large portion of skin problems are due to irritants in the air such as automobile exhaust and smoke from chemical factories”, which are more prominent today than they were 2 decades ago.Urban Polution is a Threat to Skin Health

Not only that, but the planet has become much more exposed to UV sun rays as the Earth’s ozone layer slowly deteriorates, causing a whole series of potential threats for our skin.

Serve and Protect the Skin You're in

Common skincare issues, such as the rising incidence of skin sensitivity, are partly attributed to high city pollution levels, as more of us move to urban centers. In certain Asian cities, for example, pollution levels are quantified in daily newspapers, and the local population is warned that airborne particulate matter at certain levels may hinge into skin, and result in more damage than UV rays.

Ambient pollution sources refer to air pollution in outdoor environments, and are usually caused by industrial and mobile sources such as road traffic. Indoor pollution is typically caused by tobacco, cooking, heating, and household cleaners.

Although we should be protecting our skin year-round, we are more aware of the need to protect our skin from UV damage and environmental nuisances with the start of spring and summer. On average, 18% of people protect their skin year-round, while 26% of American's protect their skin all year, according to a La Roche-Posay 2015 study.

While the sun might initially feel good on our skin (and actually release beta-endorphins which make us feel pleasure), it’s proven that harmful UV rays cause long term dark spots, sunburns, wrinkles, and even forms of skin cancer.

On the bright side, technology has allowed us to find ways to better protect our skin and prevent skin damage rather than accept it.

An 'Urban' Pollution Solution

Fortunately, you can take action to protect your skin from urban living, and here are some tips for what to look for in skincare products:

  • Topically applied products can help reduce the load of pollutant particles on your skin, and act as a barrier to help reduce pollutant penetration into skin.
  • Sunscreens for example, block UV radiation, but also prevent photo-reactive pollutants from having a negative impact on your skin.
  • Antioxidant-rich skin care products are known to block UV's detrimental impact on the skin.
  • Additionally, products that help lock in your skin's moisture, and reduce its water loss, help your skin's natural function and role as barrier.

Protection Born From Natural Dead Sea Inspiration

Our URBAN ComplexTM is one of the latest technological break-throughs for superior environmental protection, composed of 6 natural components (our patented blend of Dead Sea Minerals - the OsmoterTM, Red Seaweed, Myrrh, Antarticin NF3, Prickly Pear and Sunflower Oil, sourced from highly sun exposed areas known for their antioxidants and soothing  properties).

The complex contains a powerful mix of Dead Sea minerals coupled with these rare botanical extracts, to provide your skin with broad UVA/B protection and the sun and free radical damage, the major factors in skin discoloration and fast aging.

When combined with a UV filter, the end result creates a superior “double barrier” defense within the skin.

Imagine though for a moment, that a place existed where UV rays didn’t have the same amount of power as normal. That would mean no painful sunburns, and you could stay outside longer without harming your skin! Welcome to our home, the Dead Sea.

Dead Sea Lowest Point on Earth in the Sun light

Our Head Research and Development Manager, Dr. Miriam Oron, explains how this phenomenon results from being geographically situated at the lowest point on Earth.

“The more radiation from the sun travels, the more the rays are reflected and refracted by particles in the air. By the time the rays reach the Dead Sea, they become very short and low intensity because the have become filtered."

What this ultimately means is that there are fewer rays to cause burning, aging, and even cancer. This is why so many people with skin problems are recommended to travel to the Dead Sea.

Understandably, it may be hard to afford frequent travel to the Dead Sea- but it is now easier than ever to harness the Sea’s wonders. If you are looking to make a change in your skincare routine and shield your skin against harmful UV rays and external toxins, try our Essential Moisturizing Lotion.

It contains both our patented URBAN ComplexTM and the OsmoterTM concentrate, along with soothing cucumber, aloe vera, chamomile, and Vitamin E phosphate, to create a powerful synergetic mix of minerals and extracts for your skin. You may not be able to prevent every little thing that gets thrown your way, but you can definitely protect yourself before any damage happens.

Protect the environment and revitalize your skin with AHAVA Dead Sea minerals, and let us know how your journey goes!
